Pancreatic Cancer

What is Pancreatic Cancer?

Pancreatic cancer develops from the abnormal growth of cells in the pancreas, an organ located behind the lower part of the stomach that produces enzymes for digestion and hormones for blood sugar regulation. The most common form is pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, which starts in the cells lining the ducts that transport digestive enzymes out of the pancreas. Pancreatic cancer is seldom detected in its early stages, when it is most treatable, as symptoms typically appear only after the disease has spread to other organs.

Indications: Surgery is recommended for patients with localized pancreatic cancer where the tumor is confined to the pancreas or nearby areas and can be removed.

Chronic Pancreatitis

What is Chronic Pancreatitis?

Chronic pancreatitis is a condition where the pancreas stays inflamed over a long period, leading to lasting damage that impacts its ability to work properly. As the inflammation continues, the pancreas becomes scarred and stiff, making it harder for the organ to produce the enzymes and hormones needed for digestion and blood sugar control. People with chronic pancreatitis often experience persistent abdominal pain and oily stools. Excessive alcohol use is a common cause, but genetic factors, autoimmune disorders, and other health issues can also trigger the condition.

Indications: Surgery is considered for patients with chronic pancreatitis who suffer from persistent pain, complications like bile duct or bowel obstruction.

Pancreatic Cysts

What is Pancreatic cysts?

Pancreatic cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or within the pancreas, a gland located behind the stomach that plays a key role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. These cysts can be either benign (non-cancerous) or have the potential to become cancerous. While many pancreatic cysts cause no symptoms and are discovered incidentally, others may lead to abdominal pain, nausea, or digestive issues. They are typically classified into two categories: nonneoplastic (non-tumorous) and neoplastic (potentially cancerous), with various subtypes in each group.

Indications: Surgery is recommended for cysts that are symptomatic, large, growing, or have features suspicious for cancer. Read more articles
